This Tale of a Strong Celtic Female Leader in Savage Seventh Century Gaul

Details the Achievements of Ancient Woman Ancestors

Who are Often Neglected by Historians

Tamarac, FL – In the spirit of Clan of the Cave Bear and other sagas with strong female protagonists, Katherine Christensen’s powerful new saga …A Rib from Eve tells of an adventurous woman leader in seventh century Gaul who not only survives but thrives during  turbulent times in our distant past.

This novel features the adventures of Malgven, daughter of Merovingian King Dagobert I.  Born in 620 A.D., Malgven, unlike many women of her time, receives a fine education.  Still she lives in an era when it is hard to be both a woman and a leader.  It is also a time of vast religious change, so it is also difficult for Malgven to maintain her native mystical beliefs.

In her introduction to the novel, Christensen writes, “It was a time when pagan conversion continued and the patriarchal Catholic Church had gained a strong foothold in the Germanic and English kingdoms.  The clergy were rapidly becoming fed up with the power and influence our Celtic women ancestors exerted over their men.”

When her mother is murdered for sorcery, Malgven is shattered.  The intervention of her grandmother and her pantheistic practices allows Malgven to flourish in the wilds.  Eventually, Malgven’s father appoints her to his council; in fact, during this era many Germanic kings had their female relatives as advisors.  When her father dies, Malgven flees with her daughter, but finds herself in opposition to the new leader, King Judicael.

…A Rib from Eve follows Malgven’s adventures on land and sea as she tries to make a life for herself and her family in an era of new beliefs, treacherous times, and violent enemies.

Author Christensen believes that today’s women know too little about their female Celtic ancestors, and she feels that their achievements have been downplayed or even erased by historians.  Christensen hopes her book will give fresh insights into these ancient ancestors and provide inspiring role models for the women of today.
