Award-Winning North Carolina Poet Liza Sisk

Publishes Latest Book of Poetry

On Being Alive

With Llumina Press

Acclaimed Poet Liza Sisk’s New Works Are Deeply Felt and Personal.

They Illuminate What It Is Really Like To Be Alive.

Tamarac, FL Award-winning Asheville poet Liza Sisk has just published her new book of poems titled On Being Alive with Llumina Press.  In this new collection, Sisk, who was a finalist for the North Carolina Poetry Society’s 2005 Poet Laureate Award, offers more than two dozen works illuminating what it is really like to be alive.  Her book is illustrated with striking color photographs taken by the poet.

Sisk’s poems cover a wide range of emotions and experiences.  She writes tellingly about her childhood, her daughter, her mother, therapy sessions, love and the lack of it, religion, golf, pets, grief, travel, Nature, and many other aspects of life.

In the title poem “On Being Alive,” Sisk writes about recapturing the exuberance of youth from the vantage point of being an adult.  She writes:

Can I feel giddy with happiness again?

Can I jump into a pile of leaves

or cover myself with ocean sand?

Show me where love and pain are bound,

so I can break the chains.

The prolific Sisk, who has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Wisconsin, previously published the poetry book Condominiums, Conch Shells and Consciousness.  Her poems have appeared in many literary publications including Puerto Del Sol and Hawaii Review.  Sisk also writes children’s books including the recently-published The Clay Birds of Jesus.  She has worked in marketing communications with a variety of Fortune 100 companies and is the author of a book about technical writing in the Internet Age titled The Elements of Structure: The Step Beyond Style.

Ellen Tanner March of The New York Times calls Sisk’s latest book of poetry: “Exciting and innovative.  On Being Alive is more than a poetry book…  All-encompassing in scope and beautifully designed, On Being Alive is both deeply personal and universally profound.”
