TRAIL TO TRANQUILITY IS THE CURE FOR STRESS!

FORT LAUDERDALE, JUNE 2005:  Stress is a killer. We all know this; it’s been drummed into us for years – Type A Personality Versus The World. Stress has become so prevalent and significant in all reaches of society that this week a British Member of Parliament, often considered the most taciturn and stiff-upper-lipped people in the world, admitted to suffering under the pressure and has gone on “Stress Leave.” It’s a shame he hasn’t read The Trail to Tranquility, a self-help masterpiece by “Rabbi Rambo” Lazer Brody, on dealing with the demands of the world.

VOICE OF A GENERATION MUTED BY ITS OWN INSECURITY

FORT LAUDERDALE, JUNE  2005: Self-proclaimed “existential punk-rock goddess with a heart of soul,” Annamaria Scaccia’s belts out her poetry in a powerful and insightful voice that belies her youth.  Born in the back roads of Brooklyn, New York, Scaccia’s poems have a distinctive Brooklyn accent tinged with the dialect of disenfranchised youth.  A talented goddess, she is a staff writer to the Brooklyn College Kingsman.  Her work has appeared on www.fictionpress.com, www.poetry.com, as well as in the short-lived music-zine, PicPockit, which Scaccia founded in 2002. Scaccia also paints expressionistic, post-impressionist rock star portraits and nudes.  Her free time is spent contemplating the battle between logic and desire and writing it down in her Moleskin notebook.

LET'S NOT LET THE VICTIMS BE TRAMPLED BY OUR LIBERALISM

Fort Lauderdale, JUNE 2005:  When Karen and Sharon Sanders were abducted and brutally raped on a Louisiana May night in1977, they were only fourteen years old.  The twins and their twenty-one year old cousin were petrified that their attacker would come back to continue their torment.  He had promised to, if they told what happened, and their ravaged innocence gave them every reason to believe he would.  More than a week passed before Karen cracked and the secret was out.

THE REALITY OF IRISH FICTION

FORT LAUDERDALE, JUNE 2005:  Baghdad, Palestine, Chechnya, Belfast... places that conjure unspeakable images of destruction and death. These are areas of the world where citizens are victims of terrorists: political and religious extremist minorities who act beyond the fringes of sanity to force their will on others. People have endured the ravages of terrorism for centuries; and the world has always reacted in much the same way as it does today. Like Iraq, Palestine and Chechnya, Northern Ireland is populated with 99% loving people and 1% radical extremist... yet we seem to focus on the 1%.

ANOTHER SMALL TOWN IMMORTALIZED
FORT LAUDERDALE, JUNE 2005:  Fireside, Texas circa 1967 is the next small Southern town immortalized in literature in Marci Henna’s Becoming Ruby.  In the tradition of Fannie Flagg’s Whistle Stop, Alabama, and Rebecca Wells’ Thornton City, Louisiana, Marci Henna’s Fireside, Texas is populated by quirky characters, hot gossip, Elvis, and cozy down-home Southern cooking. The local Fireside flavor combines with nostalgic details from those Flower Power years, as two sisters come of age with Ruby and Walt, grandparents who don’t act their age and whose love is legendary.

LEFT BEHIND VS. UNDISCOVERED: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Fort Lauderdale, june 2005:  A big difference, a difference big and important enough for Wayne Arnold to write a book about.  A book that advocates excavating the gifts within us at any age is what you’ll find in his radical, yet simple thesis, No Child Undiscovered.  Not some new mix on edu-babble that advances the lock-step cattle march toward promotion that the No Child Left Behind bureaucrats offer as an educational panacea but one that empowers each individual to maximize their potential, by mining their gifts, so they can renegotiate their positions in a more global playground, as contributors as well as consumers.  A plan that replenishes individuals so that they can make a difference in their own lives, as well as in the greater, global world.
