NEWS - NEWS - NEWS:

 Fortune’s Odyssey

Fort Lauderdale, January 2009: Every day, we watch history in the making from the safety of our living rooms.  Before our eyes, wars are fought, people are killed, tidal waves swamp cities, kings and presidents rise and fall. The information age has given us news as entertainment.  But in other times, disastrous events did not happen somewhere on the other side of the world. They took place here and now and affected friends, neighbors, spouses, children. Nowadays, perhaps only historical fiction can give us a glimpse into times where safety was a fairy tale, widely sought, rarely found.

Author, Howard H. Howard has chosen such a period for his new novel, Fortune’s Odyssey. This sweeping story begins in 410 AD in the valley of Umbria a hundred miles north of Rome. Having suffered a savage blow from the siege on Rome, Lucius and Bruné go north to a safer, quieter place. She has been raped, and he lost all he knew and loved.                                                                    Read More

THE GIFTED ONES

Fort Lauderdale, January 2009:  Even in troubled times, it helps to escape into a solid but fantastic story with engaging and lovable but idiosyncratic characters speaking dialogue that “reads like eavesdropping.” Mixing the bygone ideals of the past with the shady realities of today can seriously satisfy a reader’s soul. Gabriela Herink’s new book The Gifted Ones does just that in a fresh and natural style.

At the tender age of three, when most little girls were playing with dolls and talking to imaginary friends, so was Anastasia—except her friends weren’t imaginary, but the wandering dead. Because of their refusal to accept their untimely deaths, they became trapped in the world they should have passed from, eventually acquiescing and desiring to cross over―and she helps them pass.   Read More...

Women on the Bar-B

Fort Lauderdale, January 2009:  Flipping burgers while standing around the bar-b drinking a beer and talking to your buds seems to be a male prerogative.  But who says that only men can barbecue?  Why don’t we ever see women gathered around the grill?

Women on the Bar-B by Love M. Christmas is a quick and simple guide to barbecuing/grilling for women.  Filled with information as well as humor, Women on the Bar-B will help you be the master of your fate even when that means cooking on an open fire.                                           Read More...

Flashpoint China

Fort Lauderdale, January 2009:  The United States has good neighbors. Canada is a friend and ally and and our relationship with Mexico grows stronger despite problems with illegal immigration and drugs.  But other nations are not so lucky.  Israel and the Arab nations cannot reconcile, Greece and Turkey maintain a tentative peace, India and Pakistan are at each others’ throats, and many more close neighbors live constantly on the brink of war.  Among these are Taiwan and  China.

In his new political thriller, Flashpoint China, William Cooper depicts tensions in the Taiwan Strait in 2012, when an unprecedented alignment of presidential selections in Taiwan, China, and the United States destabilize international relations.        Read More...

Look Out for Sightings…

Fort Lauderdale, January 2009:  During these troubled times, we can only wonder at what it all means. Why do humans do what they do? Why do we hurt each other? Why can’t we live in peace? Why must we take more than we give?  Sometimes, it seems that no one knows the answers.  Or perhaps we all do; we just haven’t the words to express ourselves.

Christopher Kuhl does have the words, however. Her new book, Sightings, Visions of the Human Spirit, is a spirit song, providing answers to our deepest questions in both lined and prose poetry.  Sightings is about spirituality, about what it means to be human. Although we each have an individual soul, there is a spirit that connects us all.    Read more...

VACATION ON EARTH

Fort Lauderdale, December 2008:  For all our power and inventiveness, the greatness of our art and magic of our science, our glorious loves, small joys, and important successes, the story stops when the Grim Reaper shows his face. There are no more explanations, rationalizations, or narrations. It’s over. This terrifying, riveting emotional chasm is called grief.  And sooner or later, we all learn its lessons.

Ismael Camacho’s charming story, Vacation on Earth, shows us that we are all connected through the experience of losing a loved one.  In this tale of a child’s grief and recovery, a boy finds wisdom in his grandfather’s words as told to him by his father.                                                                                   Read More

Phantom

by Susan Kay

-- Follow the lonely struggle of  the Phantom of the Opera from birth to  love to madness and death.  Read the reviews.  A bestselling novel that keeps on going...

Benson’s Race

Fort Lauderdale, January 2009:  Few children want to hear about working hard, being responsible, or earning the things they desire. However, everyone wants to know about racing through the Alaskan wilderness in the Iditarod, and when the skills and ethics of adulthood are innocently couched in a charming story about Husky puppies, the idea that “a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down” takes on new meaning.

Benson’s Race, a new book by Marilyn Clements, tells the story of Benson, a Siberian Husky, who wants to be a racer.  Giving up puppy parties and other puppy pleasures to work out on his treadmill is the first of many lessons he learns on his long road to lead Husky.     Read More...

LAS CRÓNICAS DE DANIEL

Fort Lauderdale, December 2008:  While many of us see the Bible as ancient history, for others these stories are living testaments to the power of God moving in the world.  They never get old and they never lose their ability to make us wonder.  We all know the child’s story of Daniel and the lion, but there’s so much more to learn.

Las Crónicas De Daniel by Ricardo L. Reyes tells us, in Spanish, the story of Daniel. Within the pages of this well written, carefully researched book, we follow this prophet of Judah during his captivity in Babylon under the powerful king, Nabucadrezzar. Daniel rose to the position of governor under this king because of his extraordinary knowledge of science and the Chaldean language, Aramaic, and because of his ability to decipher visions and dreams.       Read more...

Hotel Stories – Untold No Longer

Fort Lauderdale, January 2009:  What better way to keep our minds off our problems than to explore the problems of others?  And if they’re rich or famous, that’s even better. What if you were a “fly on the wall” and could observe firsthand the shocking, funny, and private affairs of well known figures of commerce, industry, entertainment, and politics?

In his new book, Hotel–Untold Stories II, Food & Beverage, Private & Confidential, author Rene D. Egle picks up where his first book, Hotel – Untold Stories, left off, but instead of relying entirely on memory for details of incidents, accidents, and anecdotes, in Hotel–Untold Stories II, all tales are based on confidential archived documents. Following young Andre Schwarz, who leaves his native Europe to work in Beijing, China as assistant Food & Beverage Manager at the Sheldon Grand Hotel, Untold Stories II presents startling and highly entertaining events from a unique perspective.         Read more..

Dreams Are Forever

Fort Lauderdale, January 2009:  No matter where we live or what era we live in, there will always be haunted houses, dark mansions, ancient secrets, and young men who cannot resist their call.  Life would be pretty dull if there were no possibility of treasure or mysterious murders to unravel.

In Dreams Are Forever, a new thriller by William Hayes, it is 1956 and Dak Leventhal, a high school senior, is asked to research a local topic for a term paper. He decides to explore a long-abandoned mansion that sits just north of the small, historic town in which he lives. His best friend, Johnnie, agrees to join him in sneaking into the old mansion where they find a secret room and some intriguing relics. However, shortly afterward, things begin to go very wrong.   Read More...
