PROFESSOR OF PHILOSOPHY BUILDS COMMUNICATIVE BRIDGE

FORT LAUDERDALE, JULY 2005:  In these days of TV, X-Box, Game Cube, Playstation, and the portable Game Boy taking the role of teacher, parent and babysitter, today’s children simply do not have the skills to interact with one another or, Heaven forbid, an adult.  Ebonics has replaced English, Jail-House Droopy Drawers have appeared on every phat male under the age of twenty, and “bling-bling” is all the rage.

Throughout twelve years of teaching Philosophy on both college and university campuses, Professor Mahoney has watched the steady slide of so many students into ever-more-cynical depths of socio-political disconnection. “It has been painful to watch,” he says, “and so...at times...like most everyone else, I have looked away.”

Finally tired of “looking away,” Mahoney wrote The Great Despiser. It’s all about communication and connections.  Intended as a promotional piece for the dialectical discourse groups Mahoney organized with his students, The Great Despiser is the story of an articulate nineteen year old community college student, Brad, during the summer of 2004.  Brad can be described as the “primal scream” of a psychically mute and passively-driven generation, a seeker of truth in a world of deception.  Through Brad’s experiences, The Great Despiser teaches about truth and scaffolds a common bridge toward honest, authentic communication among the most diverse elements of our modern culture.

Testimony to this professor’s communicative architecture are his students’ enthusiasm for embracing their newly-learned skills at building dialectic discourse, paving con-versational avenues, that all lead to a bridge named Truth.
