FORT LAUDERDALE, JULY 2005:  In these days of fragmented families, author Edwin English did something to cement his brood together.  He took up scuba diving!  English, father, author, businessman, was watching a documentary about scuba diving with his family.  Mentioning that he’d always wanted to try diving, English’s children expressed their interest in doing it with him.  Thus, a new family hobby—and his book, Scuba diving:  A Newcomer’s Point of View— evolved! 

English chronicles his family’s initial experiences diving, from the certification process until their seventy-first dive.  The Englishes plunged into scuba diving headfirst and with the kind of passion and wonder that makes neophytes into superb storytellers.  English and his family took to the sport with such enthusiasm that they planned their family vacations around dive-sites.  Their non-diving time was spent researching the sport and discussing their past adventures.  Scuba-Diving:  A Newcomer’s Point of View is an underwater travelogue of the dive sites explored, as the English family soaked up the sport and became a closer family in the process.  

While Scuba Diving is the main message of this informative guidebook, there is an underlying message that transcends the oceans of descriptions it contains.  If you want to get closer to your kids and get them to talk to you, involving the entire family in a common hobby (like scuba-diving) may just be the adhesive that bonds you together.
