Fort Lauderdale, June 2006: Fatty! Four-eyes! Brillo-head! Nerd! We all know children can be cruel. To a child, being different from the norm individually and/or culturally can be grounds for daily persecution, as well as instilling fear when it comes to the unknown. In The Long Winding Road, Lynn Broder addresses this complicated bias, and illustrates a lovely way of accepting the differences in each of us, or in the things we do, for ourselves alone.
The story begins with a rabbit family, who find and adopt Linkey, a wee one left on the doorstep, along with a puzzling note referring to the “missing link.” As Linkey grows up with his brother Binkey, he becomes aware of different characteristics between himself and his family and friends in the sheltered village of Cotton Tail. When a visitor arrives from another town and talks about his travels and experiences, Linkey’s curiosity is piqued. Linkey and Binkey set off on an adventure to the visitor’s hometown to explore a world unknown to them. Their journey starts by taking The Long Winding Road and ultimately discovering the meaning of the “missing link.”
