Heroes of the Hardest Day

I still can see them lying there

Some eyes are closed, while others stare

With sightless eyes no longer strong

For they have finished with their song

Each one a sacrifice too dear

I bend my knee and ask God clear

To find a place inside his heart

For these his children, torn apart

Too many times I see that sight

Too many times I’ve cried at night

Unable to restrain my thought

That what they did will be forgot

Forever I will hold them dear

Forever I will keep them near

My heroes of the hardest day

Who would not turn and walk away
