NEWS - NEWS - NEWS:

Baby Boomer Angst

Tamarac, June 2008: The end of World War II precipitated a period of unprecedented population growth, and gave birth to not only the “baby boomers,” but also to an era of rapid-fire social, political, and technological change in American society. Now, the children who were born and have come of age in the second half of this tumultuous century find themselves looking back, sometimes with nostalgia, other times with dismay. A new novel by author Richard Finegold (his third) chronicles the life of a Jewish boy, born in 1946, and his experiences in post-war America through the end of the twentieth century, as he, like so many others of his generation, tries to make sense of it all.

Behind the Scenes in the World

Tamarac, June 2008: Celebrities in the news flit from Hollywood to Monte Carlo to the latest "in" spot with paparazzi on their tail. International conferences and conventions deal with the most compelling issues of our time, attended by heads of state and heads of corporations. The majority of these people in the news stay at the world's five-star hotels. Who are the people who make the jet-set existence possible for people in the public eye. . . the hospitality industry professionals who work behind the scenes? What do they see, hear, and know about what goes on behind the closed doors of the rooms of international five star hotels?

Plagues Fascinate and Frighten in Fact and Fiction

Tamarac, June 2008: National Public Radio recently reported on the outbreak of a "plague" in a trendy online role-playing game that has suggested to scientists ways in which the virtual world may provide clues to how people might behave in real-life pandemics. Plagues from Biblical times to the present have frightened and intrigued us. It is easier to contemplate fighting a foe that looks like us, than to conceive a strategy to defeat a disease of unknown cause.

New Novel  Explores the Multigenerational Nature of Depressive Illness

Tamarac, June 2008: For years we have known that depressive illness can run in families. However, it was not known whether this is the result of environmental influences, or if this type of illness originates in a person's genetic make-up. Recent research into the causes of depression has demonstrated that indeed there is a heredity element to the disease. Genes alone, however, do not determine whether an individual will suffer depressive illness. They merely pass along a vulnerability to the disease. For those with this susceptibility, life circumstances and environmental factors may increase the likelihood of clinical depression or bipolar disorder occurring.

Searching for a Cure for a Rare Disease

FORT LAUDERDALE, June 2008: Today we are bombarded with opportunities to find a cure for breast cancer and other not uncommon diseases—multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy, for example.   But what about those who suffer from debilitating diseases that are uncommon? The National Institutes of Health (NIH) defines a rare disease as a disease or condition affecting fewer than 200,000 persons in the United States. They have identified about 6,000 of these disorders, which impact an estimated 25 million Americans. Profit-oriented pharmaceutical companies have little incentive to conduct research on diseases so rare that they have little potential for return on the dollar invested. NIH  has recently launched the first clinical studies of its Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network (RDCRN). They have planned  more than twenty studies at about fifty sites across the United States and abroad.  This represents a great step forward in research on diseases of this sort.

A Fish Tale not to be Missed

FORT LAUDERDALE, June 2008: Growing concern about the number of children who have problems learning to read has made reading and literacy a high priority in schools across the United States. State and national legislation has aimed at improving reading achievement in the early elementary grades. Research shows that most children not reading at grade level by the end of third grade are likely to experience  continued failure throughout their years in school, and are at high risk of dropping out. Much of the legislation focuses on intensive early intervention and requires that promotion from one grade to the next be contingent upon appropriate improvement in reading ability.

What Becomes of the Brokenhearted

Tamarac, June 2008: The news media report almost daily on scandals that bring down corporate executives, politicians, and various others among the world's movers and shakers. Whether their crimes land them in jail, or their disgraces consign them to private obscurity, we often have no idea what becomes of the one-time rising stars, now vilified in the public eye.

Encouraging young outdoor play and imagination

FORT LAUDERDALE, June 2008: The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) published the results of a study it conducted at ten locations across the United States in the February 2003 issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. It monitored the activity level of third graders, and discovered, shockingly, that the children averaged only twenty-five minutes per week of physical activity at school, compared to a minimum of 420 minutes per week that children need at this age. The World Health Organization (WHO) in a 2007 report suggested that sedentary lifestyle is one of the ten leading causes of death and disability in the world, and contributes  to unhealthy diets, obesity and chronic diseases.

Making Longevity Worth While

FORT LAUDERDALE, June 2008: Baby Boomers are coming of age, and medical science is scrambling to extend the human lifespan.  But longevity alone is not what this expanding market wants. Yes, they want to live longer, but they want —or demand—a certain quality of life.  Health, fitness, mental clarity, and—yes, sex— are high on the agenda of adults seeking the most life has to offer.  A new book by Internet blogger Ken Wear addresses their concerns.

Physical Assessment Made Simple

FORT LAUDERDALE, June 2008: Negligence and patient death rates in hospitals are rising at alarming rates according to recent reports. A survey reported in the New England Journal of Medicine found that 58% of physicians and 68% of the public cited nursing as a leading cause of medical errors. More than a third of the US doctors surveyed and 42% of the public reported that they or a family member had experienced errors in the course of medical care. A combination of factors, including a nationwide shortage of nurses, and nurses who are improperly trained in basic nursing skills, are cited as contributing to this problem.
