Fort Lauderdale, May 2006:  As of today there are eighty-nine prisoners on death row throughout the U.S., awaiting the final conclusion of their incarceration. Things have changed quite a bit in recent years for these inmates. Some are allowed pen pals, and are actually online, and most are permitted radios, fans, typewriters, religious and legal materials, mail, art supplies, and books, as well as chess and checker boards. Their lives have eased, although the struggle goes on. In her new book, Article 5, Isabelle Assante presents one such prisoner’s story in all its dismal aspects.

Death row inmate Mikey Strenton tells his life story, as courtroom scenes unfold and others give testimony—the mother of a victim, the prison chaplain, lawyers, prosecutors, prison guards, and other inmates of death row. Their collective expression of suffering leads to a moving indictment of a method of justice which leaves blood on everyone’s hands.

Article 5, based on Ms. Assante’s own experiences corresponding with a death-row prisoner, presents the human face of the death penalty—the object of explosive controversy.

About the Author:

Currently a resident of New York, Isabelle Assante has written plays produced all over Europe, the U.S. and Canada. She studied with luminary playwrights Mac Wellman and Christopher Shinn.

Isabelle has written several dramas dealing with social issues, as well as a radio play, Life and the Theater, published by Epyphanyzine (NYU Literary Magazine).
