FORT LAUDERDALE, October 2007:
Studies have shown that a person’s first name may affect his life’s outcomes . .
. but a cat? Daniel Morgenstern
named his Maine Coon Cat for the famous explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, who
attempted to cross the continent of Antarctica from sea to sea in 1914.

nation of citizens of character, possessing such traits as self-discipline,
responsibility, and good judgment. Former U.S. Secretary of Education, William
Bennett, tells us, “If we want our children to possess the traits of character

But how to do this?
Many educators feel that literature is an
effective medium for educating children, and that fictional characters
have the potential to teach positive character traits.

Education
for Character Through Stories
FORT LAUDERDALE, September 2007:
In a complex global society, our schools are challenged by the corporate
world to provided an intensive academic and technical
education to prepare today’s children to compete successfully.
However, there are many experts, including former United States Secretary
of Education William J. Bennett, who believe that developing children’s
character is equal in importance to expanding their knowledge. Character
education focuses on teaching children about basic human values including
honesty, kindness, courage, equality, generosity, and respect.
Following in the footsteps of Aesop of ancient times, author Dennis
Santos has taken up this challenge in a new book for young children,
Earl the Pearl.
