What’s in a Name?

Fort Lauderdale, October 2007:  Studies have shown that a person’s first name may affect his life’s outcomes . . . but a cat?  Daniel Morgenstern named his Maine Coon Cat for the famous explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, who attempted to cross the continent of Antarctica from sea to sea in 1914.  Did this fabulous sailing cat get his sense of adventure from his namesake?  Quite possibly.  It is widely known that domestic cats hate water; but not Ernie.

Daniel Morgenstern, a retired CEO, musician, and avid sailor himself, has written a delightful account of the sailing adventures of Ernie the Sailing Cat, who loves exploring the bays and islands of Maine aboard his family’s classic sailboat, Resolution.  Children of all ages (and their parents) will love joining Ernie on his sailing adventures, illustrated through a series of endearingly candid photographs of the precocious cat as he sails the waterways surrounding the beautiful Maine coast.  Ernie teaches as he sails—about the parts of a sailboat, the tools used for navigation, and on-board safety procedures.  And he leaves the reader with a message that applies to all aspects of life:  that no matter how bad a storm is, it will have to end; the sun will come out, the seas will calm down, and the sailor will, in time, get back home.
