Fort Lauderdale, Month 2008: That 70s Show is still going strong on prime time television, and there is a reason. While some might wonder what was so great about an age that spawned happenings, sit-ins, free love, and protest marches, others just look back and smile. It was different then.
The late 60’s and early 70’s was a tumultuous era of free love, psychedelic music, and social drug use that broke down barriers and crossed out cultural and racial boundaries. Bryan Goheen’s new book, Flashback, is a chronicle of happenings and mishaps while growing up with three brothers in the San Francisco area. It describes family life and friendship, and in the process, illustrates the transition from conventional post WW II morals and values to the new turn on/tune in way of thinking. With great humor, Goheen describes Cub Scout crew cuts giving way to long hair, milkshakes replaced by cheap wine drunk from a communal bottle, and family outings that turned into rock concerts at Golden Gate Park.
Flashback is also an account of family bonds. Charming tales of the author’s eccentric Christian Scientist grandmother will invoke memories of the quirky relatives that are part of every family. Stories of the four brothers growing up together, drifting apart, and coming back together again in maturity reaffirms the need we all have to belong to a tribe that supports and loves us through good times and bad.
Bryan Goheen, a first time author living in Olympia, Washington, wrote this book in memory of his oldest brother George, who committed suicide at age forty-eight. In their last phone conversation they reminisced about growing up together, and George said to Bryan, “Life just seems to be kind of a drag compared to when we were growing up—those days were the best.”
