FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Education  for Character Through Stories

Fort Lauderdale, September 2007:  In a complex global society, our schools are challenged by the corporate  world to provided an intensive academic and technical  education to prepare today’s children to compete successfully.  However, there are many experts, including former United States Secretary of Education William J. Bennett, who believe that developing children’s character is equal in importance to expanding their knowledge. Character education focuses on teaching children about basic human values including honesty, kindness, courage, equality, generosity, and respect.   Following in the footsteps of Aesop of ancient times, author Dennis Santos has taken up this challenge in a new book for young children, Earl the Pearl.

Earl the Pearl is a book about baseball . . . and about believing in yourself.  Earl, the baseball-loving snail, overcomes his slowness and, in his own unique style, shows his team his worth as a player. He teaches the lesson that if you really love something, and put your whole heart into it, you will succeed.  We become heroes through hard work and believing that we can overcome any obstacle standing in our way. No matter who, or what kind of critter you are, if you truly love the game, you can be a winner!

About the Author:

A native of Hawaii, Dennis Santos now resides in Santa Barbara, California, where he works as a youth minister and Little League coach. He considers participating in sports to be a learning opportunity that helps children to build character as they develop a love for the game.  He wrote Earl the Pearl to be used as a motivational tool for his players. Whimsical color illustrations that enliven the simple but inspiring story line will make this modern-day fable a perpetual favorite for the younger set.
